Important people enter our lives in the most unexpected ways. Early in 2002, we decided to disguise some exit doors with murals. Our homes provide care for people with various forms of dementia in suburban ranch-style homes.
Although the homes have large backyards available to the residents, there were some doors from which we wanted to discourage resident use. Linda Goehre came to us as a talented artist who painted bookcases on seven doors in five of our homes.
For five months, Linda applied her talent in layer after layer of paint in a multitude of visits for each door. Little did we anticipate the impact that Linda and this process would have on the residents of the homes. They visited with her as she painted and became her friends. She bonded with them in a way that was highly valued by these people living with Alzheimer's. When the murals were finished we could not let Linda disappear. Thus Linda's art classes were conceived.
For the past five years Linda has visited each of our campuses on a weekly basis throughout the year. She uses art to provide sensory, memory and mental stimulation for the residents. She assures that her classes promote self-expression and contribute to self-esteem.
At the time that we asked Linda to set up this program, we had no doubt that the residents would enjoy and benefit from the therapeutic activities that Linda offers. That has been the case - the residents thoroughly relished their participation in the program. But, we also received some unanticipated benefits:
The homes are now more interesting. Resident rooms and common areas are filled with art created in Linda's classes.
The homes display seasonal art throughout the year.
Linda captures the classes on film and makes posters for each of the homes so that the residents can share their art experience with their family and friends in spite of their memory loss. Family satisfaction has increased.
Linda's quiet, respectful approach to those with Alzheimer's has been a positive influence on staff members throughout the organization.
Linda has developed strong relationships with our residents and impacts the quality of their lives in a very positive way. Based on Linda Goehre's success with us, I do not hesitate to offer this recommendation. She will make a wonderful addition to any activity or therapy program.
Sincerely,
Janis Deets Nowak, NHA, CPA President and Owner, AmericanWay Former President and Program Administrator, New Perspective, Inc.
